115 Miles in 48 hours, from York University to Lancaster University!

We took 14 York University students on a hilly 115-mile journey to raise money for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. This was the 1st time we'd made the trip to Lancaster, and were really looking forward to traversing the country, despite the threat of horrendous weather over the weekend!! Sadly the weather forcasters didn't let us down (why is it that they never do when we're cycling somewhere?!).

We trialled some new navigation software for this trip from the guys at ViewRanger. Friends and family were able to track us live as we cycled as our ViewRanger software (running on Nokia N95s) continuously updated their servers with our location.

We were amazed at the versatility of the navigation software. We used it soley to get us from A to B without having to resort to our paper maps once, and it was great to be able to see how far we'd travelled, average speeds, elevation details (and much more!) at the end of each day.

Find out about Yorkshire Air Ambulance!
  • Early morning on Saturday - we left from York Uni Campus and cycled an easy, flat 25 miles stopping for lunch just before reaching Ripon. The afternoon got much harder as we reached the hills and started our climb up and over the pennines with gale force winds and heavy rain and hail in our faces. Our evening destination of Horton-In-Ribblesdale became an almost impossible and distant ask as the evening drew in and the weather gradually got worse. We had to call in the support vehicle to complete this very demanding day, something that we've never had to do before.

  • Sunday morning, and we were up early for a hearty breakfast and then set off towards Lancaster. There were more massive hills to negatiate throughout the day and the weather, once again, let us down with further heavy winds and downpours of rain and hail. Nevertheless the team managed to complete the day in high spirits and we finished the day in one of the bars at Lancaster University with a well deserved drink before making our way (by car!) back to York, exhausted!

The route was mainly traffic free as we trundled through the countryside with some amazing views.
